The Spanish stock market trades 28.3 billion euros in December

The Spanish stock market traded 28.3 billion euros in Equities in December, up 1.7% year on year and 0.8% more than in the previous month. The effective trading volume in 2022 totaled 362.1 billion euros, 4.2% less than in 2021. The number of trades in December was 2.25 million, 29% less than in December 2021 and down 20.6% from the previous month. The number of trades to the end of December 2022 totaled 38.9 million, down 13.7% from the previous year.

BME's market share in Spanish equities stood at 70.06%. The average spread in this month was 6.46 basis points at the first price level and 8.13 basis points with order book depth of 25,000 euros, according to an independent report by LiquidMetrix, available here. All figures include both transparent order book (LIT) trading – including auctions – and non-transparent (dark) off-book trading.

The volume traded on the Fixed Income markets reached 114.8 billion euros in 2022, after the 7 billion euros recorded in December, representing a cumulative annual decrease of 50.9%. New issues, including Public Debt and Private Fixed Income issues, amounted to 380 billion euros, a year on year decrease of 3.4% compared to 2021. In December, the volume admitted to trading was 16.8 billion euros.

At year-end the outstanding balance stood at 1.74 trillion euros, an increase of 1.6% compared to the same month of the previous year.

In the Financial Derivatives market, trading increased by 3.5% in 2022 in IBEX 35® Futures contracts. There was also a 6.6% increase in trading in Equity Options in 2022. The open interest ended the year with an increase in Equity Derivatives; Equity Futures increased by 6.4% and Equity Options by 2.3%.
